A 63-year-old woman died after being impaled by a windblown beach umbrella on a South Carolina beach on Wednesday.

The umbrella's wide canopy got caught in a strong wind, which lifted it up in the air around 12:40 p.m. and impaled Tammy Perreault in the chest with its spiked end. Perreault was at a Garden City beach at the time, according to Horry County Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.

An hour later, Perreault died of her chest injury at Tidelands Waccamaw Community Hospital.

"If everyone can please keep the Perreault family in your hearts today especially her husband Mike," nearby Scotty's Beach Bar posted on Facebook Thursday. "Mike we love you and are immensely sorry for your loss.. everyone at Scotty's, staff and Scotty's family will continue prayers."

After a woman in Virginia Beach was similarly struck and killed by a beach umbrella, Sens. Tim Kaine (D-VA) and Mark Warner (D-VA) called on the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission to enact a safety campaign for beach umbrellas, similar to its fireworks safety campaign. Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) previously asked the CPSC for the same campaign.
